Arrowsmith Lodge & Cokely Manor – November 2021

Tell us about your business/organization and what makes you stand out as an employer?

Arrowsmith Health Care Society is a not-for-profit organization that offers complex care services, assisted living suites, day programming for adults in the community, and respite services for those who live at home.  The original Arrowsmith Lodge was inspired by the community in 1968 when the need was present for a ‘personal care unit’ for seniors in the Parksville area.  Over the years we have assisted hundreds, if not thousands, of Oceanside residents with their care needs and have been fortunate enough to get to know some amazing people along the way.

Arrowsmith Lodge and Cokely Manor are operated by the community, for the community.  We reach out to other like-minded organizations in an effort to provide the best services to our elders in Oceanside.  Our mission is “To provide optimum quality care in a home-like setting while fostering links in the community”.  Our values include: putting people first, empowering others, balancing living with safety, innovation, and mutual support.

All of our rooms at Arrowsmith Lodge are subsidized by Island Health and our suites at Cokely Manor are subsidized by both Island Health and BC Housing.

How many employees do you have?

We employ approximately 180 people.  That includes full-time, part-time and casual on call.

What advice would you give someone who want so to work for your organization?

We look for people who are good critical thinkers, able to adapt to an ever-changing environment, and have a passion for helping others.  Every person is equally important here, every department has to work with each other as a team in order to make everything run smoothly.

Do we anticipate hiring in the next 6 months?  If so for what types of positions?

Yes, we are hiring now!!  There are numerous positions: housekeeping, laundry, dietary aide, cooks, care aides, registered nurses, licenced practical nurses, and activity aides.

What is the best way for someone to apply if they are interested in working for our organization?

Drop off a resume and cover letter at 266B Moilliet Street.  It is always best if you can deliver it to the proper Manager, if they are available.

Canadian Electric Vehicles Ltd. – October 2021

Tell us about your business/organization and what makes you stand out as an employer?

Canadian Electric Vehicles Ltd. (canEV)  is British Columbia’s original electric vehicle company!  Founded in 1995 in Errington, BC we have been designing and building zero emission electric vehicles and products for more than 25 years.  With electric now driving the car industry, there is surging demand for electrifying everything else – from work trucks and equipment to classic cars.  canEV is expanding both its consumer and commercial product lines to service its local and international customers.

How many employees do you have?

We are a team of six and are currently hiring for various positions.

What do you look for in a new employee?

We seek people who are focused on successful outcomes for the work they do, learning and perfecting skills and abilities, and being an effective communicator to enable our team environment.  We are a small company that is growing: each one of our team members serves and important role in our team.  We are looking for individuals who can work outside a narrow job description and are multi-talented.  Your interest in zero-emission vehicles and sustainability will enable the fit with our team, and company philosophy.

What advice would you give someone who wants to work for your organization?

If you have an interest in electric vehicles we would recommend working with anything related to gain experience whether that be joining your local electric vehicle association, events, or on-line video streaming (youtube.com) to learn more about EVs, or getting direct hands on experience.  Convert a bike to an e-bike or build a battery powered radio-controlled model; better yet convert a car to electric.  Any experience with electric motors and lithium batteries is helpful.  In regard to education, mechatronics and automation courses give a broader scope compared to mechanical or electrical engineering/technology.  Any related engineering, technology background education combined with personal hands-on experience either from work, EV associations or hobbies is attractive.

Do you anticipate hiring in the next 6 months? If so, for what types of positions?

  • Technologists and Engineers in Mechanical, Electrical and Mechatronics
  • Metal fabricators
  • Parts/Supply Chain Coordinators
  • Customer Service and Administration
