EMPLOYER OF THE MONTH – DECEMBER 2024

Tell us about your business/organization and what makes you stand out as an employer?

BC Infrastructure Benefits (BCIB) employs skilled trades workers on some of B.C.’s largest public projects. Our role is to supply skilled workers to these projects and help diversify and expand the province’s labour pool. Through the Priority Hiring of underrepresented workers, we open doors. Through culture change training, we keep people in the sector. Through training and apprenticeship partnerships, we help workers progress in their careers.

We work with contractors, unions, project owners, and training organizations to pave the way to good-paying, career-building jobs, and a stronger economy for all British Columbians.

On Vancouver Island, BCIB supplies the workforce to the Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project. The new hospital will be three times larger than the existing facility while being 30% more energy efficient. It will be a LEED Gold project – the first fully electric hospital in BC!

How many employees do you have?

Thousands of qualified, skilled tradespeople have worked for BC Infrastructure Benefits. Currently there are over 600 tradespeople working on the Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project.

What do you look for in a new employee?

We work with contractors and unions to fill positions across various projects. The positions are filled based on trades qualifications, and applicants benefit from a priority hiring system that gives preference to locals, Indigenous workers, women, and others who have been traditionally underrepresented in the trades. We’re working to open doors for people so they can build and progress their careers in the trades.

What advice would you give someone who wants to work for your organization?

Make sure your certifications are up to date and apply at BCIB.ca. When jobs come up that match an applicant’s skills, that tradesperson might be called for the job. They don’t need to closely watch for new openings, but rather create a profile and make sure it’s up to date. We work with our partners to do the rest.

Do you anticipate hiring in the next 6 months? If so, for what types of positions?

Check out the Trade Profiles Page on our website to explore current opportunities with BCIB. Trade Profiles are like job descriptions, and they highlight the roles we are currently looking to fill. You will find what certifications and other requirements are needed for this trade on this project. Requirements can change from one project to the next, so be sure to read the trade profile for the project you’re hoping to work on. If we don’t have a project or trade posted, that means we’re not looking to hire people in those places or professions at the moment – but people can still create a profile for future consideration.

What is the best way for someone to apply if they are interested in working for your organization?

Read the Trade Profile to know if you’re ready to apply. Then, click the purple “Apply Now” button to join our candidate database. That way, if a contractor needs a tradesperson with your qualifications, we’ll be able to contact you.
